Last weekend I visited Cuatro Ciénegas - an incredibly cool weekend getaway for all Mexicans and curious explorers of the Mexican North. I was so impressed by the beauty of this place. I believe I have actually never seen such beautiful pure and clear sand in my life before. Do you want to know, why the sand is so clear there? Noone is allowed to step on it with shoes! I am not joking. Can you believe standing in the middle of nowhere and someone asks you to take your shoes off? No? Well if you want the experience, visit the magical Mexican desert of Cuatro Ciénegas! :)
Cuatro Ciénegas is a natural reserve located in the dry northern Mexican desert. The local exosystem of Cuatro Cienegas itself, however, differs quite a bit from the rest of the area. You can find clear-blue pools called "Pozas" and a very unique vegetation in this little oasis protected by the Mexican Natural Reserve. I always imagined paradise to be in a jungle, yet this area could clearly be the desert version of "paradise" - totally untouched by humans and simply stunning!
When we visited the area, we arrived in our own car. I have to add that my boyfriend was Mexican though, therefore I felt safe to visit the area without any local guide. Many others though, visited the area on tour buses.
If you are traveling alone, I highly recommend you to check online for guided bus tours. From a safety point of view, this may also be a very wise decision, especially if you don't speak the language and you aren't familiar with the area.
We stayed for two days in Cuatro Ciénegas, which was absolutely sufficient to discover the area. I recommend visiting the two main "Pozas", the magical white desert and either go for a "horse-riding excursion" in the desert or take a "4-wheeler-tour" there. Plus, don't forget to prepare yourself for a cory bonfire at the end of the day. :)
The perfect Hotel for all of this is called Hacienda 1800 (unpaid advertisement). It is a small hotel in Cuatro Ciénegas which provides you with everything you need for a perfect weekend trip out of the city. From pool towels to bonfire marshmallows - they try everything to create an unforgettable experience for you.
